On the 26th of March I took the plane to Canada to meet the man I had corresponded with for 6 years. He was waiting and trying to get in touch with me all these long years, he wrote letters and called. He was struggling to win my heart because he knew for sure that I was the only woman he wanted to be together with, although he only saw my photograph.
Our correspondence started in 1998, which sounds unbelievable. Our letters to each other were few and far between. During the time, he moved from Florida to Canada, but hadn't lost my address. At first, I was not very interested, although his patience and perseverance attracted me. Nevertheless, I refused all his invitations and eventually went to work in the United Kingdom.
 This year, in January, he called again. I was already back home in Latvia. He was incredibly glad that nothing changed in my life and invited me again, reassuring me that if I refuse again, he would not bother me anymore. I was terribly curious, besides, I was attracted by this male fidelity and perseverance. I also had a natural fear of going to visit a man that I had never seen in real life. Still, I decided to take the risk.
The flight was hard and tiresome, but the friendly, attentive and caring foreigners were impressive. Finally, Ottawa. My last attempts to hide the fatigue with make-up. And the meeting. A bouquet of red roses, a smiling tanned face and a feeling that somehow something inside has relaxed and we had known each other before.
Everything that followed was like a beautiful dream, like a magic Brazilian soap opera. A dinner with candlelight, confessions that I was many times more beautiful than the photo, that his love to me had obscured his mind. The week passed in some kind of fairy tale dream. Then came an invitation to the best restaurant and I got a diamond ring. I understood that it was a proposal, and it was not made with words, but with his loving eyes. My heart melted and dissolved in the wonderful feeling of consent.
I was not even confused by the fact that we spent so little time together; I felt it was the man I had been looking for all of my life. The more time we spent together, the more confident I was about my decision. I couldn't bear to think that I might have never met him if I hadn't taken the risk; I am so grateful that he was so persistent in his desire to meet me. It is better late than never.
Soon came the wedding, now I have the surname Caballero. Just like a Brazilian soap opera! Juan is 42; he is a scientist, an engineer and a philosopher. He is a very educated and intelligent man that grew up in a big united family. All his relatives made me feel very welcome. He is very enthusiastic about my cooking skills and the fact that I cook both Russian and Latvian food. He is very interested in my son and we plan to bring him over very soon. We are also buying a house and want to have more children. I love living in Canada. The people here are very relaxed, and the life is calm and protected.
